L D R U

This guy has too many good remixes/originals and because I can’t pinpoint a specific song, I’m just gonna review the lot.

L D R U is Drew Carmody and he’s been kicking around for just over a year now. Like seemingly every good Australian artist these days, he’s signed to Future Classic and makes very Future Classic-esque music. His original song “The Tropics” that he released earlier in the year very much mirrors its name and has such perfect hard-hitting trap beats. Once you start listening, you won’t be able to stop. He also manages to remake that classic and veering-on-corny air horn into something really cool, which is not easy, to say the least. The video clip is directed by Ego, who melds video and DJing together, and is a trippy, colourful feast for the eyes – if you ever need reminding of why summer is the shit, please watch it.

Recently, L D R U has been bringing out solid remix after solid remix – he’s taken on mostly Australian artists like YesYou and The Aston Shuffle. Personally, I recommend checking out his version of Miami Horror‘s “Real Slow”. It’s trapical at its best, with an amazing build up and drop. His latest remix is of the much loved Flume song “Insane” featuring Moon Holiday where he warps the already warped up beats further. It’s like a saturation of Flume – but you can never have too much!

L D R U has just recently done a fair few gigs but you can still catch him at Field Day on New Years. Otherwise, according to his Facebook, we can look forward to some new tunes soon.

THE BREAKDOWN:

Hometown: Sydney, Australia.
Sounds like: Indian Summer, Flume, Panama.
Say what? L D R U or “Left Down Right Up” is a Grand Theft Auto cheat reference.

The Plot Melbourne

The crew from Groovin’ the Moo this year for the first time created a more city focused party called The Plot that hit both Sydney and Melbourne. It all happened last weekend and we got the low down for you. The idea behind The Plot is that you buy a digital plot of land when you buy a ticket, and then within this digital city, that includes all the artists as well, you can chat to other attendees and share music and photos.

The event was spread out over two venues so we did a fair bit of running between the venues to catch acts. We started off by catching Tyler Touché’s closing song “Baguette” which is up there one of the most danceable and funky songs – and this guy only just finished high school! After quickly bolting to the next venue we saw Indian Summer who smashed out a fun DJ set with a bunch of great and recent music, including Safia’s “Listen to Soul, Listen to Blues” which we reviewed recently. The duo have been mixing in the club scene in Melbourne for awhile so they knew how to get the party started and they also have some fantastic original music worth checking out too.

One of the highlights of the day was Wave Racer. There are so many ways to describe his set and the words “hyper-colour”, “laser”, “sparkle” and “glitch” definitely come to mind. Considering he was just signed to 2013’s unofficial label of the year Future Classic I’d recommend you watch out for him next year. Keeping with triple J Unearthed success stories, Remi also delivered a top performance. He kept the energy and crowd participation high all the way through and ended up jamming with fellow hip hop artist Citizen Kay for a lot of it. What I love is that he came off the stage after his set, greeted all his fans and willingly took photos with everyone.

Another highlight was Ballarat headliner band Gold Fields. These guys have been on the live circuit for awhile now and have deservedly been doing big things like supporting the Naked and Famous throughout the UK and playing SXSW. After their set it was a mad rush to finish the night off with Alison Wonderland. She played an extremely danceable set featuring a huge mash of genres that’s typical of her style. The music selection was spot-on and there was something for everyone. All the artists took to the stage with her towards the end and that close community feeling of The Plot was something that was quite endearing and a lot of fun.

Flight Facilities – Stand Still (feat. Micky Green)

Having had a few days of sunshine and summer weather, this new single from Flight Facilities could not have come at a better time. Pairing this time with Micky Green, a Paris-based but Australian-born singer, this song is a little bit different to the house and disco sounds we love from them, but no less infectious. The driving percussive beats mean you can’t help but move, and that whistling just makes me want to get out on to the Insta-filtered streets and in the sunshine.

Look forward to remixes of this catchy tune – from Wave Racer, Mario Basanov from Future Classic, as well as New Yorker Com Truise. You can also catch Flight Facilities if you’re headed to Stereosonic or Falls. Or both.

THE BREAKDOWN:

Hometown: Sydney, Australia.
Latest Album: Their full EP is expected early December – keep an eye out for it!
Sounds like: The Knocks, Gigamesh
Say what? The name “Flight Facilities” comes from the aviation company one of the boys’ grandfather owned – not just for cute outfits.
