Destiny’s Child – Say My Name {Cosmo’s Midnight Very Rare Bootleg}

beyonce

Cosmo’s Midnight is made up of identical twins, Cosmo and Patrick Liney, and is a relatively new and upcoming act on the Australian electronic music scene. Best known for their 2013 hit, “The Dofflin”, the boys from Sydney have managed to make a name for themselves; they were even a part of the Nina Las Vegas Presents tour earlier this year.

The twin producers have spat out a number of sick remixes, from their mix of Flume’s “Sleepless” that really sparked their emergence onto the scene, to more recent mixes of bands such as Panama and Snakadaktal. This newest mix, however, is something completely out of left field. It was first played on Wave Racer’s set for BBC Radio’s “Diplo and Friends” last month before finally being released on their SoundCloud just three hours ago.

If you didn’t know the original (let’s face it though, you do), you could be excused for not immediately recognising this as a late 90’s/early 00’s hit. The mix manages to achieve the perfect balance of the original melody with the more modern electronic sound, moving away from the pop stylings of Destiny’s Child to that rapidly growing genre that we at art felicis really love.

THE BREAKDOWN:
Hometown: Sydney, Australia
Latest EP: Surge, released 7 June 2013
Sounds like: Wave Racer, Basenji, Flume
Say what? The duo’s name was created after Cosmo made a remix of Lykke Li’s “Little Bit” at midnight one night. The mix was called “Cosmo’s Midnight Mix” and, from there, the name emerged.

RAC – Ready For It ft. St. Lucia

RAC used to stand for “Remix Artist Collective”, and their focus was on remixing music without necessarily making it dance music, but just different and interesting. These days it’s just the title that solo artist André Allen Anjos works under, making zero sense but according to his website, “who cares?”.

He’s currently right in the middle of releasing his debut album. How can you be in the middle of releasing an album? It’s split into two parts – Strangers Part I was released on the 4th of March and Strangers Part II  will be released on the 1st of April.

Much of RAC’s work is collaborative, you may have heard his song with Kele from Bloc Party “Let Go”. This album will also feature Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Tegan and Sara amongst many others.

“Ready For It” is set to be on the second part of Strangers and it features St. Lucia’s Jean-Philip Grobler and his wife Patricia Beranek. The beautiful intermingling vocals and wonderful production has captured my ears and taken me on a ride. Give it a preview on iTunes or while we wait for the song to become available, listen to “Tear You Down” featuring Alex Ebert, another song off Strangers, below

THE BREAKDOWN:

Hometown: Portland, US.
Upcoming album: Strangers, released 4th March and 1st April.
Sounds like: Goldroom, Panama.
Say what? RAC basically owns Hype Machine with 28 number 1 songs on the blog-based chart.

St Kilda Festival 2014 Review

St-Kilda-Festival-2014_4

St Kilda Festival is one of the biggest street festivals Australia has to offer. A free festival, it attracts hundreds of thousands of people each year to hear some of the best Australian music (amongst a wide variety of other activities for young and old alike). Strangely, I had never taken advantage of such a great event being held so locally but this year, when a friend asked if I wanted to go, I jumped at the opportunity. With Art vs. Science headlining and other great local acts waiting in the wings, I knew it was going to be a blast!

Wave Racer

The first act we saw was Wave Racer, the moniker for Thomas Purcell, a nominee for Triple J’s Unearthed Artist of the Year award, and a rising star in the music industry. With an incredibly relaxed stage presence that screams “I’m just here for a good time”, Wave Racer got the whole crowd jumping with awesome remixes of other popular Aussie acts, coupled with his own groove-inducing originals. His mixes of Panama’s “Always” and Flight Facilities’ “Stand Still” were highlights but it was his own stuff that stirred the biggest reaction from the crowd. “Rock U Tonite” did as its title suggests and finishing with “Stoopid” had everyone dancing right to the very end. As casually as he had started, he announced “I’m done now” and left the stage.

Gold Fields

After a successful 2013, with the release of their debut album, Black Sun, it was good to finally see Gold Fields live. The boys from Ballarat have a unique sound, kind of like a mix of alternative and indie rock, layered with tribal beats, and with a touch of electro/dance chucked in for good measure. They performed well, with popular song “You’re Still Gone” getting the best reception, but some lesser known songs lacked the excitement and energy needed to stop the crowd’s attention from waning. It was probably a fair reflection of their album which is up and down with hits and misses. However, the biggest disappointment was them finishing 15 minutes before their scheduled finish time and not even playing well-known song, and my personal favourite, “Meet My Friends”.

Art vs. Science

art vs science

The one plus of Gold Fields finishing early was being able to make it across to the main stage in time to see one of the biggest and most successful groups to come out of Australia, Art vs. Science. Acclaimed as one of Australia’s best live acts, the boys from Sydney definitely know how to rock a festival crowd and have been doing so for years with gigs at Splendour, Falls, and Parklife, just to name a few. We were a fair bit back and the glare from the sunset made things difficult but the performance was instantly captivating, sparking dancing from the get go.

Many tunes instigated sing-alongs, including “Flippers” and “Parlez Vous Francais?”, and all of them invoked dancing. The setlist was practically hit after hit after hit which made it all the stranger when large groups started leaving the stage after the hugely adored “Parlez Vous Francais?”, despite the set only being halfway through. Keyboard player and vocalist, Jim Finn, told the crowd we were “effing awesome”, making sure to keep the language suitable for an all ages audience, and they were off again playing more hits including the ever popular “Magic Fountain”, a tune from their debut EP, “Hollywood”, and more recent track “A.I.M. Fire!”. They finished strongly, inviting Melbourne band Kingswood on stage with them, and the St Kilda masses were more than receptive.

Despite missing sets from Safia, Dustin Tebbutt, Kingswood, and many more, it was an amazing festival and one that I can hardly believe was free. If you haven’t been before, make sure to check it out next year. I, for one, hope to take advantage of amazing live music, free of charge, for years to come.

Huggett out.

L D R U

This guy has too many good remixes/originals and because I can’t pinpoint a specific song, I’m just gonna review the lot.

L D R U is Drew Carmody and he’s been kicking around for just over a year now. Like seemingly every good Australian artist these days, he’s signed to Future Classic and makes very Future Classic-esque music. His original song “The Tropics” that he released earlier in the year very much mirrors its name and has such perfect hard-hitting trap beats. Once you start listening, you won’t be able to stop. He also manages to remake that classic and veering-on-corny air horn into something really cool, which is not easy, to say the least. The video clip is directed by Ego, who melds video and DJing together, and is a trippy, colourful feast for the eyes – if you ever need reminding of why summer is the shit, please watch it.

Recently, L D R U has been bringing out solid remix after solid remix – he’s taken on mostly Australian artists like YesYou and The Aston Shuffle. Personally, I recommend checking out his version of Miami Horror‘s “Real Slow”. It’s trapical at its best, with an amazing build up and drop. His latest remix is of the much loved Flume song “Insane” featuring Moon Holiday where he warps the already warped up beats further. It’s like a saturation of Flume – but you can never have too much!

L D R U has just recently done a fair few gigs but you can still catch him at Field Day on New Years. Otherwise, according to his Facebook, we can look forward to some new tunes soon.

THE BREAKDOWN:

Hometown: Sydney, Australia.
Sounds like: Indian Summer, Flume, Panama.
Say what? L D R U or “Left Down Right Up” is a Grand Theft Auto cheat reference.

THE WEEKENDER

CIMG2547

If you wanna cut to the chase with some quick and solid pointers to get you in the know, our new weekly guide The Weeekender has got you covered! In here, we’ll give you a rundown in what happened in the music world this week and give you our favourite tracks of the week.

The 27th ARIA Awards 2013 occurred this time last week, with fairly expected nominees and winners. If you follow this blog at all, you’ll have noticed our slight obsession with all things Flume, and so we’re happy that he cleaned four awards out of his eight nominations including Best Dance Release, Best Producer, Breakthrough Artist and Producer of the Year. That’s gotta be good for the ego. Tame Impala deservedly took out the big one, Album of the Year with Lonerism, as well as Best Group and Best Rock Album. Find the full list of nominees and winners here.

After looking back at 2013, we can look to the future of music with the BBC Sound of 2014 longlist being released this week as well. This list was compiled by 170 industry trend setters with each of them choosing their top three favourite rising artists, so generally it’s a fairly spot on assessment of the year ahead. We reviewed Sam Smith this week, but other artists that made it onto the list include Chance The Rapper, Sampha, FKA Twigs, George Ezra, Banks, Royal Blood and Say Lou Lou – full list here.

It’s clearly been a big week – Grammy nominations also came out! We’ll run you through the finer details soon but for now all you need is to get yourselves ready for full crazy day of music and drinking – both the Grammy’s and Triple J’s Hottest 100 will be held on Australia Day 2014. We’re excited.
